The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA) is highly pleased and honoured to announce that it has been granted a Special Consultative Status by the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), one of the six major organs of the UN, as of July 2011. Besides giving it a much wider international exposure and audibility, the consultative status granted to HRLHA enables the agency, among other things, to actively engage with the ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies as well as with the United Nations Secretariat programs and agencies in a number of ways.
The HRLHA considers the granting of this international status as a proof of effectiveness and great achievement in defending and fighting for the respect of human rights and dignity, despite the limited resources with which it has been operating. HRLHA strongly believes that it would also be a big morale booster and energizer towards working harder and achieving more in terms of defending the defenseless and speaking on behalf of those who were made voiceless. HRLHA also believes that the gaining of this status would be an enormous encouragement for both its members and supporters to make more commitments in working towards the achievement of justice, peace, and stability for all human beings regardless of their geographic or political boundaries.
The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa (HRLHA would like to use this opportunity to express its sincere gratitude, gratefulness, and appreciations to the Department of Economic and Social Affairs Office for ECOSOC Support and Coordination, NGO Branch, for the special status that it has been awarded.
HRLHA looks forward to working more effectively with the UN OHCHR, the ECOSOC, and all their subsidiaries.
The Human Rights League of the Horn of Africa/HRLHA is a non-political and non-partisan organization which attempts to challenge abuses of human rights of the peoples of various nations and nationalities in the Horn of Africa. HRLHA is aimed at defending fundamental human rights including freedoms of thought, expression, movement and organization. It is also aimed at raising the awareness of individuals about their own basic human rights and that of others. It has intended to work on the observances as well as due processes of law. It promotes the growth and development of free and vigorous civil societies.
